Spokane Food and Yard Waste Collection: How to Check Your Actual Schedule

Your collection day belongs to your address, not to a rule you can read once. Three organizations answer the question in the Spokane area, and each answers it differently. The City of Spokane runs a municipal round with an address lookup. The City of Spokane Valley buys collection under contract, so the day arrives with the account. In unincorporated Spokane County a designated hauler serves each area and sets the day itself.

This page is about when the truck comes. It is for a household that already has collection service and needs its own day confirmed, before a trip, after a move, after a holiday week, or on the evening a full cart was left standing. What belongs in each cart is the subject of the cleanup and disposal guide.

Two boundaries change the process. The first is the address, because the three arrangements share neither a schedule nor a lookup. The second is the optional subscriptions: the City’s food and yard waste cart and the Valley’s curbside collection each carry a calendar on top of the garbage day.

Quick route

Your situation Look here first Have ready
A City of Spokane address, day or week unknown The City’s Recycle Map address lookup, which also reports whether the address is inside the city The street address, typed as number, street and city together
A City address, recycling week or green cart week unknown The annual City solid waste calendar The week letter the lookup returned
A subscription food and yard waste cart The same annual calendar, which marks the collection weeks The cart’s collection day
A Spokane Valley address The subscription account with the collection provider; the City’s solid waste division for coverage questions Account number and service address
An address outside both cities The county’s recycling hotline, or its hauler jurisdiction map Address and a description of the location

The day is a property of the address

City of Spokane. Collection here is municipal. The City states that weekly garbage collection “within the city limits is required for all occupied residences”, and that garbage, yard waste and recyclables are collected on the same day. The lookup that answers for a City address is the City’s Recycle Map page. Enter the address, press the Address Lookup button, and three fields fill in: the pickup day, the pickup week, and whether the address is inside the city.

The last field matters more than it looks. A Spokane mailing address does not establish jurisdiction, and the same tool performs that test. In this session an address inside the city returned a weekday and a week letter, while a city of Spokane Valley address returned no day, no week, and an inside-the-city answer of no. Read the third field before you trust the first two, and settle a doubtful address with the jurisdiction guide. The City also links a pick-up day map from its residential collection page; the address lookup answers the same question as text.

City of Spokane Valley. Residential curbside collection is optional here and runs under an agreement between the City and its collection provider, which the City directs subscriptions and service questions to, so the day is confirmed from the account rather than from a City lookup. The City’s solid waste management division answers coverage questions on 509-720-5000. One address type sits outside the residential service: the City lists apartments and condominiums with its commercial providers, so a household in a multifamily building asks the property manager who collects before opening a subscription.

Unincorporated Spokane County. A designated hauler serves each area, and the county states that the service provider “will inform you of your collection day, services provided, and the cost of those services”. All curbside questions go to that company. Two routes find it: the county’s recycling hotline on 509-477-6800, and a hauler jurisdiction map published as a document from the county’s site. The map is read by finding the property and matching it to the legend of hauling areas, which also marks unserviced land and non-participating jurisdictions. When a property sits close to a boundary, use the hotline instead, which the county states will help a reader determine the hauler for an address.

The cities of Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake run their own disposal arrangements, as the City of Spokane states in its own explanation of the regional system, so a collection question does not cross those lines.

What shifts a collection

Three things move a collection, and each is published rather than guessed.

The annual calendar is the one document that carries all three: the recycling letters, the holiday weeks, and the collection weeks for the optional cart. It is republished each December.

The optional cart keeps its own calendar

The City’s food and yard waste cart is a subscription, and the City states that weekly collection runs March through November, with one pickup in each of January, February and December. The winter pickup falls in the first full week of the month rather than on the cart’s usual day. The weeks published for 2026 are 5 to 9 January, 2 to 6 February and 7 to 11 December, and next year’s weeks will fall differently, which is why the current calendar is the place to confirm them rather than a rule.

On a week with no collection the cart stays in a secured place at the house. The hauling arrangement and the accepted material are the pillar’s subject, and the cleanup and disposal guide sets out both.

When the cart is missed

Before reporting a miss, clear the City’s own list of faults: a cart set out after 6 a.m., placed more than two feet from the street or alley, blocked by an obstacle within three feet, or left with its arrows facing away from the street will not be emptied.

If a cart was passed over, the City routes the report through its online service request portal or by telephone on 311, or 509.755.2489 from outside the city limits. The City states that it makes every effort to return the same day or the next, that a Friday collection is picked up on the Monday because crews do not work weekends, and that a return trip is free when the miss was the City’s error. A return trip fee may apply when the driver went back for a reason that was not the City’s fault, so it is worth reading the cart before the driver.

Two further routes belong on the same sheet. A household that will be away can ask the City to suspend collection, and the City states the limits: a suspension runs two weeks or more, and a year allows two of them, so a one-week absence has no suspension route. A household that cannot move the cart to the collection point for a medical reason can ask for the City’s free pack-out service, which requires a physician’s signature on the City’s form.

Where these lookups stop

Three limits are worth knowing before a schedule disagreement turns into a complaint.

First, a lookup reports a collection round, not a time: a cart out at 6 a.m. can be emptied at any point after that.

Second, the answer is only as current as the tool: the recycling letter advances every week, and the calendar, the winter weeks and the holiday list are restated on their own cycle.

Third, an unresolved service dispute has a route above the hauler. In unincorporated Spokane County, the county asks the household to work the question up through the company first and then to take it to the state Utilities and Transportation Commission, which accepts complaints by email and through an online form. Inside the city limits, the City’s own solid waste division holds the account.

No answer on this page applies to a particular property: the lookup, the account and the hotline are where an address-specific answer exists.

A schedule record for the household

Fill the right column once, then keep the sheet with the account papers.

Next step

One action, before the next collection day: run the lookup that belongs to the address and write its answer in the sheet. If the tool reports that the address is outside the city, take the day from the account or the hauler instead, because the wrong lookup returns no day at all. Settle a doubtful address with the jurisdiction guide, and use the cleanup and disposal guide for what may go in each cart.
